השימוש ברצף האלף-בית ובשם 'ירושלים' מאפיין כתובות מאגיות, ושנת 22 (לשלטון הורדוס)

היא שנת 15 לפני הספירה. באותה שנה הגיע מרקוס אגריפה, המשנה לקיסר הרומי, לביקור

ביהודה ואף התארח בהרודיון.

מי חרת את הכתובת על הקיר ומתי? האם היה זה אחד הפועלים שעסקו בפירוק התיאטרון

ובהקמת ההר המלאכותי אחרי הביקור המלכותי? או אלמוני שחרת אותה בעת ההכנות לביקור?

נראה שלתאריך המצוין בכתובת היתה משמעות בעיני הכותב אבל לצערנו הוא לא ציין מהי.

A Magical Aramaic Inscription (?)

On the twenty-second of [the month of] Adar [in the] Year

Twenty-two Peace

in Jerusalem”

The sequential use of the Hebrew alphabet and the name “Jerusalem” is typical

of Jewish magical inscriptions. The “Year 22” (of Herod’s reign) corresponds to

the year 15 BCE, when Marcus Agrippa, the second-in-command of the Emperor

Augustus, visited Judea, and was hosted at Herodium.

Who etched the inscription on the wall – and when? Was it a laborer employed

in dismantling the theater and constructing the artificial hill after the royal visit?

Or was it etched during the preparations for the visit? It seems the date had

importance for the author of the inscription, but regrettably he did not elaborate.
